Lanckology: Dr. Laura’s Ignorance and My Thoughts On It

GET HER Lanck!!

Recently on Dr. Laura’s radio show, a black woman called in to address an issue she had been faced with regarding her white husband’s white friends using racial comments towards her, that she found offensive. Upon giving examples of the types of comments she found offensive, rather than Dr. Laura doing what I expected her to do, and giving the black woman advice as to how to approach these people in order to seize these comments from happening, she actually told the woman she needs to stop being hyper sensitive and get a sense of humour! Her reasoning for this; shows on HBO have black comedians that use the word “Nigger”, black people voted for Obama because he’s half black and the black community uses the word towards one another as kind gestures!

Now, my main problem with this response that Laura had is that, she completely disregards her duty with this woman; she was asked for advice on how to approach these people who have been offending her, and rather than Laura being sympathetic to a woman who has resentment towards her husband for his lack of understanding to her feelings and is obviously hurt by the things that have been said to her by his friends, Laura becomes the exact issue put in front of her! Not only does she completely ignore the woman’s request for help, she attacks her for feeling offended for the racial comments she was exposed to. Dr. Laura needs to understand that not every black person is spoken for by the next black person, the same way in every other race what one person does IS NOT a direct reflection of the whole race, her blatant ignorance in those regards was her first mistake in approaching this issue. Laura’s initial duty is to openly and objectively listen to her callers and provide them with the PROPER analysis of the situations they present given the minimal time span she has. To go out of her way to give her personal feelings based on judgement that is clearly biased and unjustified is extremely ignorant and callous. I am not saying Dr. Laura has no right to feel the way she did, those are her feelings and she is entitled to them, but for her to use her personal feelings as means to not give proper advice and ignore someone who opened them self to her is what I find most disgusting.

When I first started my Lanckology blog, I did it with complete understanding that there may be issues and situations I would be asked to speak on that I was against or had an opinion that may conflict with most people, but regardless of how I felt about anything I knew, the main objective to anything I wrote, was to encourage the spread of knowledge, communication and open minded thinking amongst those who were willing to read and provide me with topics of discussion, taking into account that someone willing to take the time to come to me for ANYTHING deserved my whole hearted attention, understanding and fair analysis of their plight. It would be useless of me to hear someone in confidence and demean them for their issues as if what they are going through does not matter! I’m extremely offended by Dr. Laura’s actions mostly because; she doesn’t see the harm she created, and goes as far as to create herself as the one thinking properly against a woman who still hadn’t been given any solution to the main issue she presented, if anything, Laura only added negative views to this woman’s issue which now she has to deal with on her own, without a sure way of how to approach these people offending her.

Touching on the issue itself, we as people need to understand that not everyone is receptive to the same things as we may be; understanding the boundaries of others is essential to proper interaction and respecting those boundaries is essential as well. I’ve never been the type that would get overly angered when I heard someone who isn’t black use the N-word, providing the context it was being used in. I don’t feel any word is race sensitive, but the same way “nigger” can be used offensively, so can “cracker”, “chink”, “spick” and various other words have offensive connotations. Be wary of the context and atmosphere you use these words, and respect those who show obvious sign of discomfort with the use of the word. It’s the lack of respect that makes these words so offensive and those who use them loosely without consideration of those around them are those who create such easily avoidable conflicts. To put it as simple as possible, ask before you say, and if the answer is no, respect those people and move on. This isn’t an issue of hyper sensitivity, but an issue of respecting the people you do and do not know!

Vizualize: Jay Electronica Praises Soulja Boy

If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy … you would say he’s not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, ‘Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?’ People would say no, right?

But it’s not the words, it’s energy of what he does that’s the lyrics. It’s not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone.
